  What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is an exciting medical treatment approved by the FDA and AMA which enhances tissue levels of life-giving oxygen. Normally, oxygen is almost exclusively carried by red blood cells.

During HBO therapy, there is a substantial increase in the amount of oxygen carried in all body fluids including plasma, cerobrospinal fluid, lymph, and intracellular fluids. This allows increased oxygen levels even in areas with poor or compromised blood supply as well as in areas of tissue damage.

Increasing tissue oxygen levels produces several important long-term therapeutic benefits; including, enhanced growth of new blood vessels, increased ability of white blood cells to destroy bacteria and remove toxins, increased growth of fibroblasts (cells involved in wound healing), and enhanced metabolic activity of previously marginally functioning cells, including brain neurons.

Patients receiving Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy enter a 1-person clear acrylic chamber where they breathe 100% oxygen delivered to the chamber under increased atmospheric pressure. During the treatments, which typically last 1 to 2 hours, patients relax, watch television, or sleep while they are carefully monitored by highly-trained technicians with whom they can communicate easily through an intercom system.

Hyperbaric Oxygen treatments are safe and painless, although approximately 5% of patients (typically those who report ear pain with flying) may experience mild ear discomfort.

Who can benefit from Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Some of the medical conditions for which HBOT is helpful include:

  • Air Gas Embolism (AGE)
  • Decompression Sickness (The Bends)
  • Burns
  • Carbon Monoxide (CO2) Poisoning
  • Cerebral Edema (Brain swelling)
  • Closed head injuries
  • Sickle Cell Anemia
  • Gangrene
  • Near drowning
  • Severed limbs
  • Smoke inhalation
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Organic Brain Syndrome
  • Stroke
  • Coma
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Hearing loss
  • Peripheral Neuropathy
  • Radiation Myelitis
  • Crush injuries
  • Soft-tissue injuries
  • Osteomyelitis (Acute and Chronic)
  • Non-healing fractures
  • Tendon and Ligament injuries
  • Delayed wound healing
  • Soft-tissue ulcers from arterial or venous insufficiency
  • Decubitous ulcers

You may also have heard of how HBOT helps Autism. The following are some benefits that have been found:

  • Reduction of gut inflammation issues
  • Sleeping through the night
  • Calming of behavior
  • Better focus and concentration
  • Normalizing sensory reactions
  • Improved attention to family
  • Connection to family

HBOT speeds up recovery from injuries, enhances performance, relieves fatigue, depletes lactic acid, has potent anti-aging benefits, as well as overall general health purposes. Here are just some of many professional athlete names who own/use hyperbaric chambers:

Baseball stars

  • Brian Jordan (Atlanta Braves)

A personal story: HBOT and my father

Dr. Toth speaks from personal experience in saying that Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a highly-effective medical tool. HBOT has made a significant difference in his own father's health.

"Over the past several years my father, John P. Toth, M.D., had a series of strokes, many of which were helped by Chelation Therapy. But, in one episode in 2005, the chelation did not clear all of his symptoms and he underwent ten Hyperbaric treatments which proved miraculous. The problem, however, was that my father had to be drive to Mountain View California and back for each treatment -- a 3-hour round-trip. Should he ever require this life-saving therapy again, the distance could quickly become a problem. Consequently, I decided to invest in a Hyperbaric chamber at my first office in Concord, and now at my new office in Roseville."

There is hope!
